Looking to find the Massachusetts laws concerning leather arm bands with metallic spikes, studs or similar. Is it against the law to wear an arm band with this type of adornment? If so is there any size that the spikes or studs must be before considered a dangerous weapon?

Spiked studs on an arm-band or wrist-band are not normally considered “weapons” until such time as they are used during the course of an assault.

The point of law concerning the use of such items would be whether those items caused serious bodily harm or death.

There are the obvious weapons such as guns or knives that fall under an “illegal weapon” umbrella…but to include everything else that could cause harm or death would be unlikely.

Consider an automobile. It’s not illegal to possess one…but illegal to run someone over with it.

Another example, you could use a pencil to write with or cause serious bodily injury if used as a stabbing implement.

The pencil is not illegal to possess…but can be used in a fight to cause harm.

This is where your state law would provide a criminal charge for a specific degree of assault and battery.
